Discover the wonderful Trogir
Only a short drive from the Dalmatian capital of Split stands the historic town of Trogir. It’s a peculiar town that was established as a Greek colony and has had a rich history for two thousand years. A large number of sights secured it a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which is one of the reasons you should visit Trogir.
This is why it’s a great destination for any history and architecture lover. However, nature lovers will also enjoy it since it’s located across the island of Čiovo which offers a number of great hiking trails. Also, it’s a great summer destination and you can easily reach the islands of Brač and Korčula from it. Whether you’re seeking an active holiday or a peaceful retreat, Trogir has something to offer, mixing the chill Mediterranean spirit with vibrant cultural experiences.
What to do in Trogir?
Stroll through the old town core
With a history stretching back 2300 years, Trogir’s old town core is among the most captivating ones on the Croatian coast. Make sure to check out its most famous sight, the St. Lawrence Cathedral Trogir – it was started in the 13th century, but some parts were built as late as the 16th century so you can follow the cultural evolution of the city. It’s a great testament to different architectural styles that were present in Dalmatia throughout history so it’s the perfect sight for anyone who wants to know the area a little bit better. It’s no wonder that this Cathedral is protected by UNESCO.
Experience the concerts at the Kamerlengo Castle
Possibly the best concert venue in the area is the 15th-century fortress Kamerlengo Castle. It’s partly surrounded by the sea so it offers a wonderful view of the waterfront and the city with the cathedral standing high above it. Most of the concerts take place in the summer, between June and September so make sure to check out the programme beforehand. A famous KulaKula Festival takes place in August – here you can discover some of the biggest Croatian music stars.
Take a day trip to the islands or cities
Trogir’s location makes it an excellent spot for exploring the Dalmatian coast. Just a short drive away is Split, the capital of Dalmatia and a large tourist destination. Rent a private taxi to Split and go explore the Diocletian’s Palace and eat a “soparnik”. If you’d like to explore more of Dalmatia, head to Zadar and discover the Sea Organ and windsurfing.
Aside from Čiovo, Trogir is near several amazing islands so it’s a perfect starting point for an island-hopping tour that can include:
- Šolta,
- Brač,
- Hvar,
- Korčula,
- Vis,
- and Pelješac peninsula.
Take a boat tour to the Drvenik Veliki and Drvenik Mali where you can discover the Blue Lagoon ideal for snorkelling and sunbathing. There are numerous one-day tours to these islands that will take you to the best beaches and sometimes even include a fish picnic.
Explore the nature on Čiovo
If you’re looking for an active vacation in nature, Čiovo is the place for you. This small island has endless wonderful beaches ranging from rocky to pebbled and great hiking trails which offer panoramic views of Trogir and other islands. Bring your snorkelling equipment and discover the rich sealife around the coast of Čiovo. For a romantic experience, book a sailing tour that goes around the whole island.
Where are the best beaches?
The first Trogir beach I’d suggest is Okrug Beach which is only a few kilometres from the centre. There are several cafes and beach bars here so you’ll have plenty to do, and it’s a wonderful pebbled beach.
Another excellent swimming spot is Sveti Jere Beach, named after the chapel of Sveti Jere near it. Here you can find a combination of sand, pebbles, and concrete, so everyone will find a spot for themselves. It’s ideal for a quick swim after sightseeing since it’s really close to the city centre.
There are also some great beaches on Čiovo such as Labaduša Beach with numerous cafes and beach bars, and Stari Porat with beautiful round pebbles.
Where to eat?
Some of the best restaurants in Trogir are located in the city center itself. The first is Konoba Trs, which offers a lot of traditional dishes and a great atmosphere. Here, you can feel the true Mediterranean spirit, so it’s no wonder that it’s one of Michelin Guide’s favourites.
If you’re looking for a romantic place for dinner, head to Restaurant Franka, also in the city centre. Here you’ll get a taste of the authentic Dalmatia and it’s the perfect spot for a romantic summer dining experience. A lot of restaurants in Trogir offer traditional homemade meals, and Franka is one of them.
How to get to Trogir?
As I already mentioned, Trogir is located near Split so it’s easy to reach. If you’re flying to Split, make sure to get a bus, taxi or even a ferry from Split to Trogir. This won’t take long and many people combine these two cities into one vacation. You can also travel to Trogir from Zadar or other larger Croatian cities such as Šibenik and the capital of Zagreb.
Fall in love with the historical Trogir
Trogir seamlessly blends historical significance with natural beauty, offering visitors a unique and enriching experience. No matter whether you’re exploring only the old town core, or hiking on Čiovo, Trogir will delight you. It’s a great starting point for discovering the rest of Dalmatia too since it’s close to many other amazing destinations. The great Trogir weather will allow you to make the most out of your vacation so bring your SPFs and bathing suits for lots and lots of sunbathing in the beautiful Adriatic sea.
